Understanding Fluoride in Maricopa

September 17, 2024

Global Water - Santa Cruz Water Company, Inc. recently sent a notice to customers in the City of Maricopa regarding the level of fluoride in drinking water.  The drinking water in the City of Maricopa meets all requirements of the Safe Water Drinking Act.  However, we notified customers in 2023 and again in 2024, that the fluoride levels were increasing.  We also began making necessary operational changes to address the fluoride level and reduce the level so that the water will continue to meet Safe Drinking Water Act requirements.

We are committed to keeping our customers informed on this issue.

In late August 2024, after over a year of planning, design, and construction, we brought a new well on line in our water system.  The addition of a new well provides an additional source of water and allows us to make operational adjustments to reduce fluoride levels.

We routinely report the results of our water quality testing to the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality ("ADEQ").  We will continue to work closely with ADEQ to make sure they are advised of our testing results.  We have also advised the Arizona Corporation Commission and the City of Maricopa of this issue.

Fluoride is a naturally occurring substance, we do not add fluoride to the water.  However, fluoride may cause discoloration of teeth in children younger than nine years of age.  As stated in the notice, we recommend that parents discuss this issue with their dentist or health care provider, to determine the best course of action.
